The annual Springhill Barn dance has been a summer favorite for the church for 11 years. It is a time when we can work together to put on an event is great for the whole family. The gathering is at Roys barn a couple miles south of Springhill. This historic barn offers a great view of the surrounding mountains and an atmosphere just right for relaxing in a country setting. The evening starts out with BBQ beef and pork cooked on the grill and all the fixings. There is always plenty of food and ice cold beverages (soda, water, tea and lemonade) and coffee for those that can’t function without it. Pull up a chair at a table or sit at a picnic table, either way there is plenty of room. This year we will have a tent to make sure that nobody’s fun is spoiled by rain, wind or too much sun. Finish off your meal with a huge selection of homemade pies and alamode if you like. During the meal you will have plenty of time to look at the many items on the silent auction. Many of these are hand-crafted by members of the community and church. There is also a country store with locally made breads, jams and other favorites. When the meal is over and the bidding stops we take about 45 minutes in a fun live auction for higher value items. We have had many hunting trips, airplane rides, vacation rentals, art and other great items that go to the highest bidder. Don’t worry about the kids, during the auction there will be activities to keep them busy while mom and dad bid on their favorite item.
After the auction get ready to kick up your heels with the country music from “The Pretty Good String Band”. This band has been a favorite for many years. They get everybody up to dance whether you are an expert or beginner. Make sure you have a bottle of water to keep you cooled down! It is always great to see the teenagers having a great time dancing to the country line and contra type dances. There are also the waltzes and two-steps to please everyone. This year we have a covered dance floor outside which will help those that don’t like taking those steps up to the barn loft.
The money we’ve raised from the barn dance has gone for hurricane relief, Love Inc., local food bank and other charities depending on the needs addressed by our Session members.
It’s always a great time and a wonderful chance to get to know some new folks. Invite your friends and neighbors and kick it up this year at the Springhill Barn Dance and BBQ.
